Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof is the main train station for Mönchengladbach in North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Although there are no long-distance nor high-speed train services, it is among the busiest stations in the region. There are frequent regional trains to nearby cities in several directions, including Aachen – Mönchengladbach – Neuss – Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach – Cologne, and Mönchengladbach – Krefeld – Duisburg – Essen. Mönchengladbach Train Station is the western terminus of line S8 of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn (to Neuss – Düsseldorf – Wuppertal – Hagen). You can access the high speed train (ICE) network in Düsseldorf or Cologne.
The station is located at Europaplatz in Mönchengladbach city centre, about 10-12 minutes walk from Rathausplatz. Major streets near Mönchengladbach Train Station include Hindenburgstrasse, Goebenstrasse, Sittardstrasse, and Bismarckstrasse.
Quite uniquely, there is another train station named Hauptbahnhof within the area of Mönchengladbach – Rheydt Hauptbahnhof in the southern part of the city. This is for historical reasons, as Mönchengladbach and Rheydt were separate cities until 1975, and the train station has not been renamed after the merger.
