There are actually two big train stations in Kassel and there is sometimes confusion regarding which one is which. See the explanation below to make sure you search hotels near the right train station.
Kassel Hauptbahnhof is the old, traditional main train station of Kassel. It is very centrally located, 5 minutes walk from Königsstrasse and Königsplatz in Kassel Inner City. This station is served mainly by regional trains, but high speed ICE trains do not go to this station.
Kassel Hauptbahnhof is sometimes being referred to as “Kassel Old Train Station” or “Old Hauptbahnhof”, because it is much older than the other station. Hauptbahnhof is still the official name of this station.

Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is the main station for high speed and long distance trains in Kassel. It was built in 1980’s, when the high speed line between Würzburg and Hannover was built. The reason was that the old Kassel Hauptbahnhof was not suitable for making the high speed trains stop here, because they would have to change direction (the Hauptbahnhof is one way only).
Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is located in Bad Wilhelmshöhe district, slightly outside the inner city, but still within good reach (20 minutes walk) and with very frequent tram connections. It is sometimes being referred to “Kassel Main Station” or “Kassel New Main Station” or “Kassel Central Station”. There is some confusion in this.
