As in other big German cities, Hauptbahnhof is the central train station in Hamburg. All categories of trains stop here, from local commuter trains and S-Bahn to long distance trains and ICE high speed trains. With 450,000 passengers per day, Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is the busiest train station in Germany and the second busiest in Europe.
Although Hauptbahnhof is the most important and the most centrally located, there are two additional long distance train stations in Hamburg: Hamburg-Altona and Hamburg-Dammtor.
The Central Station is located in Hamburg-Mitte (Hamburg-Middle) district, in the eastern part of the historical centre. Major streets near Hamburg Hauptbahnhof include Steintorwall, Steintorbrücke, Altmannbrücke, Adenauerallee, and Kirchenallee. In Adenauerallee, about 200 metres from the train station, there is Hamburg Central Bus Station (ZOB).
It is very close to many tourist attractions, cultural venues (like museums or theatres), and important places in Hamburg. The well-known shopping street Mönckebergstrasse starts near the station and goes to the middle of the old town and Hamburg City Hall.
The station has access to both S-Bahn (local trains) and U-Bahn (metro) networks. In the S-Bahn network the station is referred to simply as Hauptbahnhof. In the U-Bahn network there are actually two stops linked to the train station: Hauptbahnhof Nord (line U2) and Hauptbahnhof Süd (lines U1 and U3).
