Hamburg-Altona Train Station is one of the 3 long distance train stations in Hamburg (the other two are Hamburg Dammtor and Hamburg Hauptbahnhof). Altona Station is known to many people in Germany and abroad as the terminus of many long distance trains (including many ICE high speed trains, for example from Munich, Stuttgart, or Basel), therefore the name is familiar even to those who have never been to Hamburg actually.
Hamburg Altona Station is also an important junction of regional trains and S-Bahn. It is on the main central section of Hamburg S-Bahn network – the so called City S-Bahn, which goes in a long tunnel under big part of the city. S-Bahn lines S1, S2, and S3 stop at Altona. Line S1 connects the city centre with Hamburg Airport.
Altona is the name of the whole district, where the train station is located. It is in the western part of Hamburg, on the right bank of the Elbe River. The train station is situated at Paul-Nevermann-Platz. Nearby streets include Scheel-Plessen-Strasse (on the western side of the station), Präsident-Krahn-Strasse (eastern side), and Max-Brauer-Allee (the big street).
