Hamm Train Station

Unlike in most other German cities, the main train station in Hamm is not called Hauptbahnhof, but Hamm (Westfalen) – in the timetables you can often see it as Hamm (Westf) or Hamm (W).

Although Hamm is a much smaller city when compared to some of its peers in North Rhine-Westphalia, the train station in Hamm is among the most important long distance train hubs in the region and a junction of high-speed ICE trains. There are ICE trains for Berlin at 1 hour interval and trains for many other German cities, including Aachen, Cologne, Bonn, Hannover, and the major cities in the Rhein-Ruhr region like Dortmund or Wuppertal.

The Train Station’s Location in Hamm

During big part of Hamm’s history the railroad has played an important role in the life and economy of the city, and the location of Hamm Train Station reflects this (and the looks of the station’s building does too). It is situated in the middle of the city, with the individual railway branches going to all directions. The main entrance to the train station is from Platz der Deutschen Einheit on the eastern side, facing the historical centre. The centre of Hamm is very small and you can easily get to almost all important places by walk from the station, although local buses also stop right next to the station.
