Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station) is situated next to the junction of Hiberniastrasse, Ringstrasse, Wildenbruchstrasse, and Wickingstrasse in the centre of Gelsenkirchen. You can access the station from both sides – north (Bahnhofstrasse and Bahnhofsvorplatz, Hiberniastrasse) or south (Bochumer Strasse and Neustadtplatz).
The Altstadt (historical centre) starts immediately on the northern side of the train station. Remarkable places near Gelsenkirchen Train Station include Stadtgarten, Heinrich-König-Platz, and Altstadt Friedhof.
There are some, though not that many, long-distance (IC or EC) trains serving Gelsenkirchen Train Station. However, Gelsenkirchen is one stop from Essen Hbf, where you can access more trains, including high speed ICE or Thalys trains.
Gelsenkirchen Train Station is served by many regional trains, including line S2 of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn. This line branches in Gelsenkirchen, and therefore you can go in three different directions from here (Herne-Dortmund, Essen, and Oberhausen-Duisburg).
