Stockholm Central Station is located between Norrmalm and Kungsholmen in the very centre of Stockholm. It is just across the water from Stockholm City Hall and (across another canal) from Gamla Stan (Stockholm Old Town). The station is best accessible from Vasagatan (one of the main streets) and Central Plan (Central Square).
Stockholm Central Station is known by several different names and can be listed under different names in different timetables and materials. Frequently used alternative names for Stockholm Central Station are:
Stockholm Central Station is the largest railway station in Sweden. It has train connections to all parts of Sweden and all major cities.
Stockholm Central Station is served by all categories of trains, from local commuter trains to InterCity, night trains, and X2000 high-speed trains. Most trains at Stockholm Central Station are operated by SJ (Statens Järnvägar, Swedish state-owned railway company) or SL (Stockholmståg, Stockholm local trains), but there are exceptions (e.g. Veolia trains or Arlanda Express).
The metro station at Stockholm Central Station is named T-Centralen (T-Central). T stands for tunnelbana, Swedish word for underground railway. T-Centralen is the only station in Stockholm Metro system that has access to all 3 metro line colours (blue, red, and green). As a result, Stockholm Central Train Station, together with T-Centralen and the nearby central bus station (Cityterminalen) is the most important and the busiest public transport junction in Stockholm (and the whole Sweden), for both long distance and local traffic.
There are several options for the transfer between Stockholm Central Station and Arlanda (Stockholm International Airport). The most convenient, but also one of the most expensive options, is Arlanda Express Train (travel time 20 minutes, 15-minute intervals during the day). There are also regular trains with similar travel duration, but less frequent connections – but they are also significantly cheaper than Arlanda Express.
Another alternative is the bus – it is slightly cheaper than regular train and much cheaper than Arlanda Express. There are at least two different companies operating buses between Arlanda and Cityterminalen (the bus station next to Stockholm Central Station): Flygbussarna (literally flight buses) and Swebus. Travel time by bus is about 40 minutes.
The cheapest option is the local transport (trains + bus number 583). It takes 60 minutes or more from Stockholm Central Station to the airport. The price difference is not that big compared to the direct buses mentioned above.
The fastest service between Skavsta and Stockholm Central Station (Cityterminalen) is operated by Flygbussarna. Travel time is about 80 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a train from Stockholm Central Station to Nyköping (the city closest to Skavsta Airport) and a local bus from Nyköping Train Station to the airport.
