Hotels on A470 between Merthyr and Brecon

The distance between Merthyr and Brecon on A470 is about 18 miles. It is a nice drive passing through the Brecon Beacons national park. There are no towns, only small settlements with individual hotels.

Hotels near Llwyn-on Reservoir

The first two accommodation options are some 4-5 miles after Merthyr, directly on A470 next to the Llwyn-on Reservoir. It is a nice area where you can take an easy walk in the evening. The Taff trail passes right here. It is best if you have a car, but buses from Merthyr to Brecon also stop at Llwyn-on. The two hotels are:

  • Arfryn House Bed and Breakfast – scores 9.8/10 on guest reviews at time of writing this; guests like comfortable rooms with large sized bathrooms and good breakfast; free parking and free wifi of course
  • Llwyn Onn Guest House – Some 200 yards from the above and also highly rated (“friendly/helpful staff” and “tasty/amazing breakfast” have been mentioned multiple times); often slightly cheaper than the above B&B; free wifi, free parking

Nant Ddu Lodge

Some 3-4 miles further up the valley there is another hotel, situated near the second of the three reservoirs.

  • Nant Ddu Lodge Hotel & Spa – this one also has a swimming pool, spa and fitness, plus plenty of outdoor activity options in the surroundings, including walking and fishing

Hotels off A470 near Brecon

After you have passed the highest point (Storey Arms – no hotels there) and the road starts descending to Brecon, there are two more accommodation options before you arrive to Libanus (the first village before Brecon):

  • Baddegai Holiday Cottage – good if you are a bigger group (up to 8 people), but often sold out long in advance
  • YHA Brecon Beacons – the cheapest option between Merthyr and Brecon, and probably in the entire Brecon Beacons; offers both dorm beds and private rooms and the usual YHA amenities; just 300 yards from the A470 with big free parking place

Other Hotels near Merthyr and Brecon

Both Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon offer plenty of accommodation options for different budgets and needs. However, if you come to stay for more than one night and like the nature, it is worth considering a place outside these bigger towns. One nice and well accessible location is Pontsticill reservoir, which is in another valley running to the north from Merthyr Tydfil, with several B&B’s and guesthouses. On the other side of Brecon Beacons there are several villages and hotels along the river Usk.
