North Coast of Penang

The north coast is the most popular tourist area on Penang and has the best beaches. The most popular section of Penang north coast with the highest concentration of hotels and tourist services is the area around Batu Feringgi, which is also the resort furthest to the west from Georgetown (Penang capital).

Georgetown (Penang Capital)

The capital city is the second most popular area on Penang, especially for those who want to not only relax on the beach, but also explore the island’s other attractions. Penang has many interesting monuments and things to do and Georgetown itself is a well preserved colonial city. Its advantage is of course good bus connection to virtually any part of Penang. For more details (which part of the city and which hotels) see where to stay in Georgetown.

Bayan Lepas and Penang East Coast

Bayan Lepas is a city on the east coast. It has fewer hotels and tourist attractions than Georgetown, but it is has its advantages – especially proximity to Penang Airport and Penang Bridge (connection to Malay Peninsula).

Outside Penang Island

Jerejak Island

Pulau Jerejak (Jerejak Island) is a small island off Penang each coast, very close to Bayan Lepas. It fells much quieter, which can be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on what you are looking for. The connection to Penang is very good though. Anyway, accommodation options are very limited on the island. One good place is the Jerejak Rainforest Resort.

Malay Peninsula (Butterworth and Perai)

Bigger cities on the other side of the strait on Malay Peninsula are Butterworth and Perai (it’s actually like one city). They have good links to Penang either by bus or ferry and several good hotels, although most people of course prefer to stay directly on Penang.
